Falls Prevention Programs and education

Falls Prevention Programs and education help to improve the quality of life of seniors aged 65 years and older and decrease the burden of falls on the health care system.

Falls lead to serious injuries, sometimes death, hospitalization, and are the main reason that seniors are institutionalized in Long Term Care.

Risk Factors can be broken down into six main areas:

1.    Physiological

·      Balance deficit

·      Gait deficit

·      Muscle weakness

·      Mobility Issues

·      Inappropriate use of assistive devices

2.    Medical

·      History of falls

·      Addiction to drugs or alcohol

·      Cognitive impairment

·      Diseases such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Coronary Artery Disease, Diabetes, Parkinson disease

·      Depression

·      Postural Hypertension

3.     Socio-demographic

·      Age

·      Gender

·      Social determinants of health – living in poverty, housing, income, education 

4.   Pharmacological

·      Anti-epileptic drugs

·      Anti-psychotics

·      Incorrect use of pain medications

·      Use of multiple drugs – drug interactions

·      Psychotropic drugs – sedatives, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs

5.    Behavioral

·      Agitation, confusion

·      Fear of falling

·      Inappropriate footwear

·      Haste or poor-judgment

·      Risk taking

6.     Environment

·      Poor lighting

·      Mats that don’t have rubber backing

·      Loose carpeting or floor boards, linoleum

·      Electrical cords that are placed along walking paths

·      Poorly lit staircases

·      Clutter and debris

·      Outdoor environment: no snow and ice removal

·      Cracked walkways

·      Unsafe stairs, rails

·      Poor outdoor lighting

At Alert/Best Nursing & Home Care we do a free client and environmental assessment for new clients. The home safety check is done for the benefit of our clients and staff, to reduce the risk for falls and other injuries. Often minor issues can be resolved. Problems that require medical assessment or repairs are discussed with the client and family.

Dr. Maureen Markle-Reid shared the objectives of a five year program of research led by herself and Jenny Ploeg, School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University. The Principle Knowledge User is Dr. Debra Bournes, Provincial Chief Nursing Officer, Ontario Ministry of Health.  Research will be carried out in Ontario and Alberta by an experienced interdisciplinary team of investigators, scientists and clinicians, advised by patients and families, and supported by senior health system decision makers.

“Objectives/Proposed Activities:  The aim of this research is to promote optimal aging at home for older adults with multiple chronic condition (MCC) and to support family caregivers.  To this end, the program will design new and innovative community interventions to improve access to health care, health related quality of life and health outcomes, while reducing.”

2013 Neurobehavioral Conference in Acquired Brain Injury

May 9,10 at the Hamilton Convention Centre

2013 was the 20^th Anniversary of Hamilton Health Sciences Annual Neurobehavioral Conference.  The conference is a highly regarded educational event with this year’s theme being “ Innovative Strategies for Issues Complicating Brain Injury.” There were over 300 delegates in attendance and numerous sponsors including: Gluckstein & Associates, Himelfarb & Prozanski Lawyers, Rosss & McBride Lawyers, De Rose and Assoc. The 2013 Annual Handic Conference May 16, 2013

The Hamilton and Neighbouring District Infection Control (HANDIC) group held it’s 17^th annual Education Day at the Grand Olympia Banquet & Convention Centre, 660 Barton St., in Stoney Creek. 

Over 200 professionals from Long Term Care, Public Health and Acute Care were in attendance.  Topics covered by guest speakers included Managing Outbreaks in Community, LTC and Acute Care, Challenges faced during The 2012 Influenza Season, and Best Practices in Infection Control.

This was Alert/Best Nursing’s 4^th year sponsoring this great educational event.
